Al Volo Osteria in Washington DC

My family took me here for my birthday. The atmosphere was intimate, the staff friendly and efficient, and the food was unbelievable. It felt like what I would imagine the experience would be in Italy. Highly recommend and would love to visit again.

Their Italian takeout/delivery is the best I’ve had. They package your order with care (as best they can) so you can enjoy your food right away or after it gets to you and has not wilted, cooled, or softened. Octopus salad, polpette, burratta, wine selection, everything. It’s all wonderful.

Great pork osso bucci, great service, great wine. It is worth the trip.

This Italian Restaurant serves really great pastas. The ambience it s super cozy and warm. The staff was warm and friendly. They also have good options in specials menu. I would definitely go again next time.

I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. By far, the best food experience I had in DC during my trip. The server was 1) beautiful, 2) smelled so good, 3) very friendly and great conversationalist. I had the old fashioned carbonara and it was to die for. What a treat to watch them cook the food right in front of you! The pasta was perfect Al Dente, the cheese and egg sauce was just... perfect. I loved this experience here. The food is well worth any wait you may have.

I ordered rigatoni with sausage and it was awful. Pasta way overcooked. And it was the worst dish I had in D.C.

Absolutely marvelous experience. Delicious fresh pasta and great prices. Huge portions. Our waitress was so nice. The atmosphere is intimate and cute. Highly recommend this place to anyone who loves Italian food.

I miss going here for dinner!! We’ve been buying handmade pasta and sauce from the farmers market to make up for it though. The pasta is amazing, try the mushroom pappardelle!!! Can’t wait to come back for a meal of bolognese and short rub and dessert

Better than Filomena, all things considered.*Lower prices, better food, albeit less selection (actual italian vs "american italian" cuisine). DELICIOUS! Seriously, I liked it better than DP!To be fari; I'd say filomena is probably better for a grandiose event, with the deocrations, white table cloths, carnivale, cordials, and cakes, but Volo is a much better value offering, a bettter staple with just as good, and often better, food. I love Filomena as well, and I will go back there, but I' going to go to Volo probably 3-5 more times, at least, first.

I love this restaurant. It’s rare to be ignored at a restaurant in DC but Al Volo Osteria is an exception - order a bottle of wine and take your time and no one will attempt to chase you out the minute you put down your knife and fork. Service is as close to European as it gets. Our waiter suggested an excellent wine pairing and both the short rib and burrata raviolis were excellent. Portions and prices are well balanced. Atmosphere is warm and friendly. Don’t worry about volume unless you are hard of hearing. Looking forward to returning!

I am not usually excited about Italian restaurants, but I must say this is a grand exception. Every meal served here was perfectly well made. The servers were very helpful and sweet. The pumpkin ravioli was a treat. So is the Pork risotto. I highly recommend this place.

Great food for really reasonable prices! Seems to start getting really busy at about 8 so make a reservation or come in a little earlier.

Excellent hand-made pasta and a menu that won't overwhelm. Good wine list. Service is usually solid. The restaurant is an intimate, hole-in-the-wall type Italian spot. One of my favorites in DC.

I love the bread! The meal and dessert is a bit too heavy for me, but over all it’s great!

5/5 for atmosphere, food, and service. The chef Rolando Frias personally came to my table to ask me how my meal was. I truly felt like I was treated as family at this restaurant. The sous-chef Jonathan Frias came and gave me homemade gelato. It was an astounding experience!

My favorite Italian in the city! You have to try the osso buco!

Loved the food and the super friendly staff. I tried the special--Pappardelle with Duck Ragout--and I will never forget it. The pasta was so fresh and the sauce was just melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I can't wait to go back!

Food is great. I recommend the gnocchi with four cheeses but any of their pastas are amazing. The staff are great and dynamic!

I loved Al Volo Osteria so much after my first time that I got dinner here with visiting family just one week later. The two pasta dishes I tried were amazing and the tiramisu was good I got it both times. Will absolutely be back here regularly.

This was the best Italian food my wife and I have had in a LONG time. Nothing pretentious about this place- just kick ass food. The antipasta appetizer was delicious and honestly could have served four people instead of just the two of us. My pasta in a wild boar ragu was... holy gods... amazing. My wife’s raviolis were equally good. Service was great. Really reminded us of an osteria in Italy. We will be back and can’t wait.

Great service and excellent food. I had the Fettuccini w smoked pork belly and its was delicious. Pork belly basically melted in your mouth. Pasta was al dente and fresh. Server made a great suggestion with the wine for my dish. Tiramisu was so nice and airy, sweet but not overpowering. I had a great night and I would definitely recommend.

At first I wasn't keen on the atmosphere. It's a tight place and you sit very close to others and it is LOUD. However, the food was AHHMAZING! Homemade pasta, and the wine we ordered was retail price, not marked up. I couldn't believe it. But again, back to the food.... everything is made from scratch. Our server Alana was one of the best that we have had anywhere in a long time. She was so enthusiastic and really was an outstanding representative for this restaurant. I hope you make it to Italy Alana. Thanks for making our dinner experience perfect in addition to the outstanding meal we had.

I’ve been here a few times and each visit was a wonderful experience filled with good food. The servers are very friendly and they know the menu well. I’ve eaten the bolognese sauce and the ravioli di burrata. My friend has tried the beef lasagna and rigatoni with pork sausage and broccoli rabe. Each dish was delicious. The restaurant as a whole has a great family vibe to it. I look forward to the next time I eat here.

One of the best meals I've ever had. The complimentary bread with olive oil was great, and the spaghetti carbonara was to die for. There's no substitute for fresh pasta.

This restaurant offers great food and service and is great ambience if you're going as a couple. Its not too loud and you can find seating that's located in view of the kitchen, where you can see the chefs busy with your meal! The waiter we had offered great advice on picking advice and even offered us a sizable sample!

Food was sublime. The tiramisu was the best I have had anywhere including Italy! They were packed so obviously the place is popular. Good place for special occasions or just for authentic Italian.

Sadly, we had a terrible experience at Al Volo on Saturday night. We sat down at 6:30pm and were promptly told that both the calamari and the arancini were sold out. When we started to order our entrees, we were told that there was no Bolognese sauce, at an ITALIAN restaurant?!? We then sat for almost an hour to get our meals. We have previously had great meals but, will not be going back anytime soon.

Amazing pasta and cooked to perfection. Not much seating so be prepared to wait during peak hours...

They have very nice breads that we could not get enough of! The Pastas were homemade and all delicious, we were party of 6 (2 families) and it was one of the highlight of our Washington visit! The waiter was fun, enjoyable, and helpful! Try this while You are strolling Adams Morgan, You will get a real Italian taste!

Second time in a week. My partner found this place and on a whim we decided to get dinner. The service was attentive and I believe, all Italian. The chefs even waved at us as we came in. The food was outstanding. I've never seen food come out of a kitchen as fresh as it did here, all plates were steaming. Could not recommend this place more strongly.

My wife and I stayed in a hotel nearby and found this nice place on our first night (Nov 10).We went back there two days later again as it was fantastic! Lovely staff and the best pasta I ever had (the Carbonara!). Fantastic Restaurant, we were lucky to get a table both days, as it seems to be a very popular place, you should book in advance.

Great food, nice ambiance, but poor service from our waiter. Didn't take our order until 20 minutes after we were seated, and then never came back again, not once. Someone else brought our food, and the hostess eventually brought us more water when we asked her. But the meal was excellent

Delicious pasta, especially the braised beef pappardelle which was a special. Try and avoid sitting in the very back by the bathrooms—it’s very loud as this is where the bussing station and dishwasher is. Main reason I took a star off.
